Mat Silver & Tony Burt - Waimea
Above the Sky Records
Catalogue Number: ABOVE018
Fresh from their recent work remixing the classic Barber's Adagio, it was good to see the
guys returning back to their home label of Above The Sky for their new release, Waimea. On
remix duties this time, the mighty Alex M.O.R.P.H. which looked good from the word go.
Onto the promo vinyl and you get the following:
A1) Original Mix
B1) Alex M.O.R.P.H. Remix
Starting off with the original first and a quick synth effect soon gives way to a tough
kickdrum to get things moving. The layers of percussion begin to build towards the 1
minute mark then a nice driving bassline comes in. A short drop and a lush filtering acidy
synth riff comes in over the bassline powering things along and begins to build the power
in the track. An almost chiming synth riff comes in soon joined by the main riff and then
at around the 2.30 mark this quickly drops away to the synths only to quickly kick back in
as the emotion builds towards the break. The main break comes as lush choral pads and strings
come in behind the main riff as it filters and builds. A piano riff comes in and then drops
away as the main riff powers in from the back as the snares start to roll and the hairs on
the back of my neck jump right on end - what a riff!!!! The beat kicks back in hard towards
the outro - top stuff!
Onto the b side and the M.O.R.P.H. remix. No messing around here starting off with a
pounding beat and quiet background synth fx. A synthy bassline begins to drift in then
drops at around the minute to come back in with layers of arpeggiated synths layered over
the top to move the tune up to top gear. The main riff from the build in the original mix
comes over the top as the tune builds to drop away just before the 2 minute mark then kick
back in with the bassline again - great stuff. A powerful synth takes over the riff as again
the tune builds more and more towards the main break at around the 3 mins 30 mark dropping
away to a dark acidy bass synth which is sure to send the crowd cheering. The haunting piano
riff comes in amongst the layers of pads and strings then the main synth riff comes in before
dropping the beats back in with a vengeance.
This is basically a kickass peaktime monster of the highest order. The Original Mix is the
one for my with it's tough chunky vibe or you might prefer the more synthy style of the
M.O.R.P.H. mix, but to be honest either side is going to lift the roof. Absolutely wicked
new release from Above The Sky and one I'm looking forward to dropping at Hotdog this
weekend. Essential stuff.
