Icone - Sorrow
Abora Recordings
Catalogue Number: ABR001
My first taste of Icone came last night whilst listening to John Askew on kiss100
so you’ll have to forgive me if my knowledge of said artist is a little thin. The
record label, as I'm sure most MPFS regulars are aware of comes in the form of no
other than Josef Wardle and Damien Henshaw, aka Xalno and DjDamo of the forums.
Their first release and what a release it is. Baring in mind Damien’s track record
and being completely oblivious to Icone I expected this one to be nothing more than
a 5 minute track created in Fruity by some 13 year old on Tranceaddicts.
Original
How wrong was I. This is full on. It’s exactly what the doctor ordered. If it were
manufactured by Ronseal, it would do exactly what it says on the tin. To start we
have an intro of every Dj’s dream, a simple percussion with stabs of a deep morphing
bass line floating in the background. When it drops there’s a distinct feeling of
togetherness, you no that old feeling you had when Rank 1 – Airwave kicked in? That’s
the one I'm talking about. The break down builds with a low key riff which fades in
fast before it notches up a gear and kicks in for the main bar. After your lengthy
bosh session you’re greeted with a scene from the build up, like it or hate it this
gives you time to breathe if you’re clubbing or mix out early if you’re the Dj. The
second breakdown is shorter than the original, skipping all the unnecessary wind down
sample bits and bobs. There’s a short sequence of breaks (Hazzah to breaks!) and then
back to the main event.
Now you’ll have to bear in mind I'm really fussy with my trance, what you like I cant
stand and what you don’t like I think is average, it takes something out of this world
to rock my boat. Well, this one fails in the boat rocking but only just. Its jam pack
full of the right ingredients to have me requesting it to Mr. Dj at the booth AND I’d
even buy/play it myself. But I don’t think it has that “pass the test of time”
certificate.
Hemstock and Jennings mix
These guys I HAVE heard of, thankfully I’ve been playing a few of there remixes before
I realised Les Hemstock was a member of the Jive Bunny. Any how, on to the track.
The mix intro isn’t as above; it’s great for mixing in but doesn’t have the elements
to make it listenable material as a solo track. Still, if it were shortened for a radio
edit I imagine it would be cut right out, no question.
The breakdown? Yes more of that please. With very few elements of the original making
the remix this makes a good track great. It’s hard to describe what its like, almost
offending but in the good way. Kind of like it wants to hurt your ears with its high
pitched squeal. It doesn’t mess around kicking back in and when it does it takes the
squeaky riff and plants it over a nice firm beat keeping everyone happy.
What’s more pleasing with this is there’s no major wait for the second break down.
In, out in a matter of moments with no messing, my type of track. With this kind of
action its hard to get bored of it, your not waiting around for a silly long time for
it to get going again but at the same time its not repeating itself so much it gets
annoying.
My preferred remix? Hard to say, the original sounds much cleaner and crisper yet the
remix has that funky riff going off that sells itself from the word go. Tough choice,
one I’ll leave to you to decide on, my only advice? Keep an eye out for this one;
it has the potential to off big time.
