Peetu S - Bigger Palace EP

Catalogue Number: ALT019

Besides a remix and a collaborative single for Spinnin records back in 2004, I cannot find any previous work for Peetu S, nor do I know anything about his background. The label this release is on, Altitude, is also new to me. Thus this little three-track package comes as a rather tasty surprise...

Bigger Palace itself is a techtrance monster, with a tight thuddy kick & hugely powerful rolling bassline, which work together to give it a hell of a drive right from the start. Structure-wise it builds up like a standard piece of epic trance, only substituting floaty synths for techy stabs & flat-out raw power, before winding down into a break towards the 3 minute mark. The break is alot more floaty & trancey than the buildup to it suggests; epic pads combined with ethnic-sounding vocals & plucked instruments, which conjure up quite a lovely atmosphere. The peak which follows is modest; shying away from a huge trancey riff in favour of a small nagging little synthline (which offers a brief nod to Chicane - Offshore), driving the tune onwards-to-fade in the manner it started in. The difference between the break and the rest of the tune is pretty significant; while some may think the trancey bits are out-of-character, I personally thought the contrast worked a treat.

The Battle is more of a full-on banging dirty techno affair. It keeps the tough kick from Bigger Palace, only stripping out all the synths and packing it to the brim with tough percussion elements and an absolutely FILTHY bassline. There isn't a hook of any kind; the beat, bass & percussion drive the track through to the end relentlessly, pausing only occasionally for bouts of percussive solo freestyling (for want of a better description) and crazy bassline effects. Make no mistake, this is techno with balls on... not for the feinthearted!

Saja is the weakest of the three. Not only does it lack the awesome power of the other two, but also manages to be a complete ripoff of the classic techtrancer 'Industry' by The Green Martian. That's not to say it's awful; it's tough, dark & would function quite well as an updated industry remix, but there isn't anything new here & it pales in comparison to the preceeding tracks.

Fans of all things techy & energetic could do alot worse than to check this release out; the first two are awesome examples of their respective styles & would go down a treat in clubland.
