Alucard Presents The 49th Line Featuring Jennifer Grimm – Blue on Blue
Somatic Sense Future
Catalogue Number: Somaticwl001/Somaticwl002
I wont lie to you I've not bought this track, nor do I have any intention of doing so.
I have the original untweaked version Peter sent me in the summer of 2004 along with a
chill out mix, (haha, up yours tune spotters)! Don’t get me wrong I'm all for supporting
the music industry, (especially Peter, a good friend of mine) but I'm not inspired by
trance in the slightest, and why purchase a heap of remixes I know I wont enjoy? So for
this review I'm afraid you’re left with the original only, feel free to add your own
comments on the other remixes in the forum.
It was... Many moons ago when Peter McCowan aka Alucard sent me a track through msn
labeled blu2. A beautiful prog track featuring male vocals that actually worked more
than you can imagine. Its only fault? The repeated vocals wore thin fast, there were
just too many instances of them, though lovely as they were, they soon became annoying.
Fast forward to Global Gathering 2004, myself and Peter were sat in Witherspoons
discussing the female vocals and which we preferred. I myself can vouch for the bloke.
Never have I been so encaptivated by male vocals on a trance track, the notion of such a
concoction is almost ridiculous. Yet for me, the two meshed so well I was almost outraged
that Peter had settled with Jennifer Grimm.
Here we are, the first quarter of 2005 and finally one of Alucard’s finer moments gets
the official release it deserves, featuring Jennifer, I'm a little crushed, but not heart
broken. See, its still a magnificent track, one you can actually loose yourself in.
Those subtle guitar strings (I imagine there guitar strings, I could be wrong, I'm not
that musically knowledgeable) could hold the track on their own, bliss, pure bliss.
Up to and during the breakdown, before the significant change in direction I feel myself
sitting on the sad fence... You know that fence Chicane – No Ordinary Morning/Autumn Tactics
sits on? I know it’s not “slit your wrist” type of music, and I'm sure that’s not what
Peter was going for either, it just attaches itself to memories long gone. Of course when
that plinky plinky chime kicks in the shaky picture in your mind fades away leaving clear
blue skies over calm blue water (no pun intended) and a feeling of tranquility.
This is where this mix shines over the original sent to me with male vocals. Very few
instances of vocals flow throughout the remainder of the track and when they do there only
short bursts ripped from various spots over the two verses.
Overall whilst this isn’t my favorite piece from the Alucard camp (nor is the male vocal
version) it certainly takes its place amongst his best. Who knows, in the distant future
Somatic Sense Future might release his chill out mix, THEN your in for a real treat!
