Brad Carter - Morning Always Comes Too Soon
Positiva Recordings
Catalogue Number: CDTIVDJ210
Another Positiva track fell through my letter box this month, I held my breath hoping and
praying it was anything but the latest addition to my stilton collection. Thankfully my
prayers were answered, another injection of superbly produced funky house laced with lyrics
that set to make it a chart success.
History lesson first, you sitting down comfortably? Brad Carter may not be a name you’ll
recognise instantly however any idiot could tell you a track by the legendary Ruff Drivers.
At the dawn of the speed garage explosion back when most of you were in school Ruff Drivers
along with 187 lock down lead the pack by a long shot. How things change, speed garage went
back underground; Brad leaves the heavy bass lines alone and joins the funky band wagon
bringing with him the best of the golden island we all miss deeply.
Original Mix
This has radio friendly written all over it. Easy on the ears with lyrics your average Joe
will pick up instantly. That girl at your work place that hates dance music will know this
one from her local Ritzy, that’s because its uber accessible, a perfect formula for a
guaranteed hit.
I think if you’ve never heard it before you’d pick up on the fact it feels like Deepest Blue
– Deepest Blue. This isn’t a bad thing, DB managed to sit on the fence between too radio
friendly (if you know what I mean) and a quality piece of dance music. Regardless of weather
you’ll agree on this it will certainly follow in its footsteps, sang and loved by all and a
major player in clubs across the country.
The lyrics are repeated a little to much for my liking but then it gets away with it on the
ground there not bad lyrics. The riff is uplifting and could probably hold the track together
on its own should a dub make the final press release.
All in all I reckon it’s a little to fluffy for my liking, I’d sooner hear it on the radio
whilst driving to work than whilst I'm out and about having a bosh.
Mark Knight & Martijn Ten Velden Vocal Remix
Well, things start off with a kick to die for. Has a bit more umph to it than the original,
MUCH better let me tell you. Other than that you won’t notice much difference to be honest,
not till you get to the lengthy break down around the 6 minute mark. There you’re greeted
with a whole host of effects on the lyrics before the closing sequence (which sounds exactly
the same as the first 5 minutes).
If this and the Original were the only two pressed to vinyl you’d play this mix out defiantly,
in fact I reckon even the Ritzy folk would even bosh this one out, its not quite so dreary,
the effects in the breakdown add a little spice to it plus the kick is much beefier, however
its still not quite what your looking for in terms of “dance your tits off” material.
Flash Brothers Remix
Before even listening to the CD my money was on this one being my personal favourite, the
excellent “Amen” did it for me in more ways than one, it rekindled my love for Sander
Kleinberg (after he played it at Sensation White 2004). Ok so I'm not actually the length of
the CD through yet but I think I was right, this is booooootiful!
First of all the over kill on the lyrics is out the window, a few splashes of em here and
there rinsed with effects and you’ve got the gist of it. Its not just the lyrics that’s under
gone the knife, the riff has taken a beating, cut, split, splashed, sploshed, you name it,
its had it.
The best thing, the lyrics/riff aren’t even the strong point of the track, it’s the up tempo
happy feel groove pasted together with a very deep and powerful B line. It’s not the kind that
rocks your speakers and scares old ladies, but the kind that could class itself as a riff.
Its proper beautiful, very cheerful, brings a smile from ear to ear and a wiggle to your ass.
Unquestionably my favourite remix so far, whilst it’s probably a little to up tempo to make
a funky house by no means does that mean I wouldn’t use it. By hell I’d pitch everything up
to +8 to squeeze this baby in if I had to, it really is that good!
Kalista Mix
Here we go, the mix you can almost picture yourself being played at Space in Ibiza. The whole
feel and groove reeks of the golden island and every decent bar/club housed their.
Whilst there’s a distinct feel of overkill on the lyrics again the funky factor improves
almost ten fold over the Original making it more acceptable. The riff is almost drowned
out in favour of that solid groove we’ve all familiarised ourselves with relation to deep
house.
In my personal opinion this doesn’t have a patch on the Flash Brothers remix, HOWEVER, I
imagine this is the preferred remix of every funky Dj on the circuit, I could be very wrong
but it has that classier appeal to it, the kind associated with the glamour clubbing, that
make sense? I know what I meant in my head!
Weather you’re a Ritzy monkey, like your music up tempo or your so smooth butter slides off
you, the latest offering from Positiva is for you. Yet another perfect example of Funky
taking the lime light over the aging trance scene, whilst it would be a shame to see Trance
die a painful death if Funky music like this is what's waiting for us on the other side,
it's all good.
