Menno De Jong Pres. Halcyon - Watermark
Captured Music
Catalogue Number: CAPTURED5
Following on from their previous releases including Passiva, Halifax this time Mike
Shiver's Captured Music label pick up one another fine release from talented up and
coming producer Menno De Jong (who's even registered on MPFS smile.gif) and grab Daniel
Zehavi and Efi Rand aka Inner & Outer for remix duties.
Original Mix
This starts off with the typical crisp production we've come to expect from Menno with
layers of congas hidden away in the back. The perc builds a little with layers of mellow
pads in the background towards the one minute mark then a nice bassline drops in to join
the proceedings. A short drop and then sweeping synths drop over the bassline along with
a subtle acidy bassline over in the background builds things nicely. Again subtlely is
the key here as a layered synth riff comes in to lift the atmosphere further into the
break at around the 3 minute mark. Layers of sweeping filtering synths bring in the drop
which has some lush almost pan-pipe like sweeping pads which really work well, then the
main mellow synth riff returns before the beat and bassline drop back in. Quality stuff
from Menno again and a perfect tune for using towards the end of a warmup set as you're
building the tempo to the more peak time tunes.
Inner & Outer Remix
Now right from the off this brings a whole lot more peak time action, starting with a
nice tough kick and driving bassline. The percussion begins to build alongside occasional
resonant synths stabs before it really kicks in using the main riff from the original
mix but with more power and a dark acidy bassline. A short drop at around the 1.30 mark
then the tune powers back in with a lush arpeggiated synth line over the top to give this
a really massive epic sound. The synths drop away to the kick bassline and acidy synths
alongside some mad siren like pads then boom to the drop. A pulsey synth similar to that
used on Tiesto's Lethal Industry brings the main riff in the break, with layers and layers
of pads and fx for that guaranteed hands in the air moment. The bassline comes thumping
back in then kicks back in hard with the pads, synths to power the tune on again. A
second drop just after the 5 min 30 mark changes the style somewhat with a twisted acidy
riff which just works so well.
Something for everyone on this package I'd say, with the Original Mix being favoured for
the early sets and the Inner & Outer Remix for those more peaktime moments. I'm favouring
the Inner & Outer Remix of the two mixes and I've been playing it both on my RiseFM show
and also out and about regularly for the last month or two. Another great release from
Captured.
