Commander Tom - Attention

Data Records

Catalogue Number: DATA81P1

This release from the data sub-label of M.O.S. sees Commander Tom borrowing a short vocal snippet from Novy & Eniac's classic 'Superstar' and bringing it to a modern club sound. I got sent this through a few weeks ago, with this particular promo vinyl featuring the F&W, Steve Murano and Original Club mixes - but are they any good?

F&W Mix

Now let's be honest here, you either love the tough trance sound of F&W or well, you don't. Yep they're not the most original producers and they do have a sound which could be considered very samey, but what you cant deny is the awesome power in their productions. This remix is no different - pounding hard beats and tough driving synth and basslines power the tune up from the word go with the vocal snippets from Superstar dropped in 'C'mon don't hesitate etc.' to good effect. I've played this out and about and on my radio show and every single time the response has been absolutely massive - yep the vocals may be that little bit cheesy but the punters love it and at the end of the day as a DJ that's the idea - to keep the crowds happy.

Steve Murano Mix

Before we start I'd like to say that I'm also a big fan of Steve's work. I still play his remix of Dark Monks - Insane all the time so I was looking forward to checking this. Surprisingly enough, it's not so much a hard trance tune as more of a Benny Benassi style techy housey kinda vibe with layers of squelchy acid bass sounds until it begins to kick in just before the 2 minute mark. Again a dark tough kind of vibe making use of the Superstar vocal which will make a nice change from the F&W mix if you get bored of it.

Original Club Mix

This starts off with an almost break like beat before kicking into the 4/4 then dropping at around the minute mark. An arpeggiated bassline soon kicks in with a very commercial slant with lots of 'ooh ooh' samples and this is definitely not for me. Good for the Ritzy style clubs but definitely not something I'd play.

Overall then a good release for Data - as I said before you're either gonna love or hate the vocal for starters. You're also gonna either love or hate F&W mix depending whether you like their particular style, which is my particular fave mix on this package. Regardless, the track actually works brilliantly on a dancefloor and I also saw AJ Gibson drop this on NYE up at Fixation and the crowd went mental, so I suggest putting your predudices aside for a second and giving it a try.
