Dirt Devils - Music Is Life
Nu Life
Catalogue Number: NUX84
For those who don't know, Dirt Devils is yet another alias for the ever busy
pair of Jono Grant & Paavo Siljamaki otherwise known as Above & Beyond, Oceanlab etc.
The Dirt Devils alias allows them to deliver some more commercial and harder trance
styles, with the previous release 'The Drill' getting hammered all over clubland by
commercial and club jocks alike. Again this release is signed initially to NuLife
and we have the original mix on the a side with a remix from Jono Grant Vs P.O.S. on
the b side. Can't fault the guys - do your own remix work and save paying someone
else to do it - good plan!!
Anyway back to the original tune and first up, the original mix. Now I have to
confess to a bit of a love hate relationship with NuLife as they do release some crap
in amongst the occasional gem. Crap such as Love Inc against some nicer stuff like
Joshua Ryan - Pistolwhip for starters so I'm not usually that excited by a NuLife
release. But I have to confess that I did play The Drill when it first came out and
I'm a huge fan of Above & Beyond so I fired up the tune. Much as I hate to say it,
it's really really catchy indeed! It's quite a different sound, kinda electro style
trance is the best way I can of describing it. Almost tribal beats with a small
vocoded voice dropping in 'Music Is Life..Life is Love..Love is music..Music is Life'
over the top in almost a Kraftwerk style. This drops to the main riff which is quite
a harsh synth sound with the catchiest riff I've heard in ages - you'll be kicking
yourself when you're whistling this at work for days. The commercial DJs are gonna
love this - I certainly wouldn't play this out in the clubs I play at though but Judge
Jules, Dave Pearce and the more commercial club DJs are hammering it.
Over to the b side for the Jono Grant Vs Pos mix and now we have something to
really my teeth into. Starts with just a small bass synth riff with some percussion for
a few bars then the bassdrum kicks in - this is well nice and my ears prick up. Small
snippets of the vocoded sample kick over the driving bass riff 'Music......Music is
Life' which helps drive this along nicely. This drops to an almost New Order - Blue
Monday bassline which fades out into some lovely filtered synth chords for the riff
which filter in and out. The snare roll kicks in, the vocal snippets continue and
drops back in - niiiiiiice. Lots of builds and drops really help the mood of the tune
and that pumpin bassline really works well - played this in my set yesterday at Reckless
and a couple of people came up and asked what the tune was which is always a good sign.
Sure fire entry on my next promo cd - this is a lush bit of driving trance.
In conclusion, this is gonna be massive. Commercial clubs will love the a side
and the proper tranceheads are gonna love the remix. Check it.
