Marc West Vs Genix - Magnetika

Equilibrium Records

Catalogue Number: EQ010ST

You may remember Equilibrium from their quality earlier releases such as Oracle - The One and others. They've been a little quiet for a while in terms of releases but thanks to a new distribution deal for the label this track is finally going to see the light of day, which some of us have been lucky enough to be playing from CD-R from the middle of last year or before! As I understand it, the vinyls have now been pressed and should be being released soon so I thought I'd get a new review done for you guys.

This particular release sees Passion resident DJ team up with very talented producer Genix on an uplifting trance vibe. On remix duties this time we see St John again team up with awesome producer Perry O'Neill under his Locust guise and finally a Digital Deliquents remix tops off the package.

Original Mix

This starts off with a nice crisp production, soon joined by layers of sweeping pads and synths. A mellow arpeggio riff drops in over the top and builds the tune a little with the main distinctive riff coming through towards the first short drop just after the 2 minute mark. It's a nice production but more suited towards an early set as it's a little on the mellow side for a peaktime set.

St John Vs Locust Mix

Now this is more like it! Starts with a nice typical beat from their pair and from the off it's much more of a peaktime trancer. The percussion builds and is joined by layers of bubbling synths in the background giving this a great intro for transitions. The main bassline kicks in and begins to lift up the power on the tune. The main break comes just before the 3 minute mark as layers of choirs come in from the background then the main stabby synth riff from the original kicks in and works like a dream. Not massively uplifting as such but just works so much better than in the original mix for me and this is the mix I've been playing loads and was also featured in my Passion demo cd from last July. Cracking stuff from the guys on this one.

Digital Delinquents Mix

This starts with a synthy pad swirl then a nice tough kick comes in as layers of filtering white noise fx sweep in over the top. A short drop then a wicked bassline comes back in before the beat kicks back in along with a lush synth arpeggio over the top. Again much more of a peaktime trancer than the original mix and I can see this mix also being very popular with the trance fans. Layers of filtering synth stabs come in over the bassline before the break. Lush layers of synth pads also add depth and power to the production making this also definitely worth checking out.

Overall then a great release from Equilibrium and it's great to see they're back pumping out the quality tracks. Definitely out of the three mixes I'm favouring the St John Vs Locust mix but the Digital Delinquents follows up a close second.
