Filo & Peri Feat. Tiff Lacey - Dance With A Devil
Empire States Records
Catalogue Number: ESRW002
Well I was pretty damn happy when this arrived through my door this week,
the latest promo CD-R from Domenick Filopei and Bo Pericic a.k.a. Filo &
Peri's very own Empire State Recordings. I've been a massive fan of all
the previous releases on this label (Closer Now and Luana) and I'd already
heard a couple of short preview clips from Dom so I was looking forward to
checking this out for sure!
This time it's more of a peaktime trance number featuring the vocal talents
of none other than Tiff Lacey.
Original Mix
This starts off with a nice tough kick and perc and straight from the start
it's a different vibe from previous Filo & Peri productions as it's got a
much tougher style. A short whispered vocal from Tiff and the beats drop away
to a twisting acid monster of a bassline which sets the scene nicely for whats
to come - awesome stuff. The twisting layers of synths build as we go to the
break and thats when the awesome main vocal line drops in. Imagine Benny
Benassi on steroids and you're halfway to imagining what this sounds like -
pitched up a few BPM in a peaktime trance set and this will absolutely rock
the place. Tough pounding beats and dark synthlines and a great vocal hook -
love it.
Serge Devant Mix
This takes a more progressive trance style on the track and begins with a
nice kick and percussion. Bubbling acidy synths come in over and then the
beats drop away to a groovy almost funky bassline which is layered with
futuristic electro style synths which give this a spacey feel and a
brilliantly different vibe from the original. The main break comes at around
the 3:30 mark as the main vocal 'Dance With a Devil' vocal line comes with a
mental twisting legato synth line before the beats and groovy bassline kick
back in. This will be great for early warmup sets and is also a refreshing
change from the typical progressive trance sound.
Electro Rerub
This mix sees Filo & Peri take the original, drop the bpm from around 134 to
130 and turn on the electro vibe. It begins with some chunky electro style
percussion again giving this remix a completely different vibe from the
original style. Then the beats drop away to a absolutely mental legato synth
line in a kinda Benny Benassi style with tough pounding kick. The layers of
percussion build with layers of 303 lines before the awesome vocal line drops
in over the synths and boy does it work. IMO this mix has the potential to
give this track serious cross-over appeal.
Overall another great release from the guys on their own label. It's nice to
see producers taking a risk and producing something a little different in style
from their previous tracks and in this case it works beautifully. The original
mix whilst quite slow on the BPM at 134 when pitched up a few percent turns into
a full-on peaktime trance monster and the Electro Rerub could seriously take this
into the mainstream with a few radio plays for sure. The two mixes by Filo & Peri
certainly show the talent and ability of the pair to produce a range of styles and
from trance to house, this is a package well worth checking out. Definitely a
label to watch in 2005 and certainly a track which I'm gonna be hammering in the
next month or two.
