Candee Jay - If I were you (Michael Woods remix)
Incentive Music
Catalogue Number: N/A
Not being a fan of euro pop pap, and because MPFS isn't really aimed at that
kind of thing, for the sake of this track we're only going to be concerned with the
Michael Woods remix. That said, Candee Jay's debut is actually causing a storm in the
US, and the video has been shot allegedly in Las Vegas. Which is all rather surprising
considering as you may have guessed she is actually Dutch, born in the small seaport
city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. For those of you wondering what the sinful
original in question sounds like, think Lasgo meets Alice Deejay in a back to back
down your local cheesy club, pumping out 'trance' at an under 18's disco. It's really
nasty stuff. Forthcoming unsurprisingly then on Incentive. Okay so maybe that comment
is a little harsh on the Incentive guys considering how good a job Michael Woods has
done of transforming this slice of mature cheddar into something completely infectious
and uplifting. So maybe we could credit them with good business sense, after all they
stand to make a tidy bundle with this one I.m quite sure.
So onto the all important remix, if you were a fan of Warrior - If you want me,
you'll be hard pushed to dislike this, in fact I.d wage some good money on the fact
that you'll love it. Why? Because as we've predictably come to expect from Mr.Woods over
the past couple of years, his tracks and mixes sound remarkably alike, true, it's
production laziness of the highest order and regularly frowned upon. However, with this
Candee Jay mix, I.m tempted to let all that slide, simply because I love it. It's
already been a Judge Jules tried and tested record of the week on his much listened to
Radio 1 show, and no doubt destined for quite big things.
So as a run down, as if you'd need it, what we have are typically typical Michael
Woods.s beats and bass, chugging and dirty and used time and time again. Sometimes he gets
it right (If you want me), sometimes he gets it a little bit wrong (Deepest Blue remix),
in this instance he's got it spot on. Admittedly there was little to work with from the
original, and it's been completely stripped, a vocal hook has been taken, shaped and
moulded around classic Woods synth lines, which are so simple yet so unashamedly
effective. There's little chance this won't tap its way into your head and have you
singing the line 'If I were you' over and over and over some more. For the hook alone
there is massive potential for this to be rinsed dry and thus leave us who have had the
pleasure of early doors listening to be utterly sick to the back teeth of this by the time
it may crash land into the UK top 20. But for the meantime though, enjoy it, true it's
a really obvious track, it's easy on brainpower, subtle as a sledge hammer, but the
summer is coming and tracks like this just have an unquestionable knack of working.
There's really no need to go into production politics with something like this, you're
either going to love it or hate it.
