Jody Lei - Just The Music

Independiente Records

Catalogue Number: JTML1

Release date: 17/05/04

Got this mailed through last week and whilst not my usual style, I thought I'd give you guys a revew since it might well appeal to some of you

What you get here are the following mixes:

A1) ChumboMusic Mix
B1) Hoxton Whores Mix
B2) ChumboMusic Dub

Starting off with the A side and Tom Stephan (http://www.tomstephan.com) turns out one of his typically dark and tribal remixes. It starts with tough tribal beats soon and the vocal 'shake your body....work your body' starts to drift in over the top. A dark bassline comes in over the top with filtered chord stabs and fx. Now I have to say here that I do love Tom's stuff for my darker more chilled moments and I've got quite a few of his old tracks on Tribal and other labels. The main thing I would say here is that the vocal aint bad but it's not great and maybe a little commercial, although I know Tom has been playing it a lot out so it might work well in a club. Not something I'd play with that much vocal (especially the "y'all need to dance bit' but might well appeal to the househeads out there.

Onto the B side and we start off with the Hoxton Whores mix. Again I do appreciate a good bit of funky house on occasion and I have to say I do like the stuff by these guys, especially some of their cheeky cuts on Hideaway and other tracks. This is one of their typical funky workouts with a phat ass bassline which I think will work really well in a funky set. I think the vocal also works much better with this style of track than the Superchumbo mix and they've chopped up the vocals and stuff to work it into the track rather than using the whole vocal - not bad at all. It also loses the cheesy "y'all" bit from the original vocal you'll be pleased to know.

The Superchumbo dub is basically the A side but with much more stripped down vocals with just a few snippets here and there. I like the dark tribal style but again it's not something I'd particularly play as it's not my typical style although I could maybe fit the dub into an early warmup set.

Funky fans should definitely check the Hoxton Whores mix if uplifting funky house is your thing. Otherwise the Superchumbo vocal isn't Tom's best work by a long way but the dub is worth a look.
