Lab 4 - Candyman
Tidy
Every so often, a tune that should not really work comes along and blows our minds.
The classic opera piece "O fortuna" is given a complete make over label 4 style. Those less
refined members of the community will recognise the track from the old spice advert of old and more
recently, the new adidas advert.
Originally released on One Inch Records it's been brought kicking and screaming in to 2003 by
re-release experts Tidy. Tidy have given it their own make over with the help of their hard trance master
that can do no wrong, Guyver.
Listening to the original now it is a perfect analogy of what hard house should be. It's full of
energy, anticipation and dirty hard beats. The track starts as it means to carry on; adding twisted samples,
a heavy bass and steady percussion. Subtle key changes in the bass add that extra finesse. As with all Lab
4 tracks, the filter is used to the max kicking in almost straight away and putting this as a tune primed
for a peak time set. Then the mother of all breakdown hits you hard. Dark, dirty and filtered as only lab 4
know how, the riff is muted to a near silence before kicking in in all its glory. Then Lab 4 do the unthinkable
and add the original sample from the classic masterpiece which, although it shouldn't, adds that extra energy
to the track. Nevertheless, it does not stop there. The track continues like a freight train; there really is
no stopping it.
Lucky I had this on original press however, as with all great tunes, it's taken a bit of damage due
to wear and tear and as such I'm buying it again. I suggest you do too.
