Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme (ATFC’S / Norman Jay remix)
Positiva Records
Catalogue Number: n/a
Well, unless you’ve been living in a cave you’ll no doubt no Shapeshifters top the chart
recently we’ve their fabulous Lola’s theme. Jam packed with amazing mixes could this track
get any bigger? Yes it can.
I’d like to apologise for this review taking so long to go up. My promos are still delivered
to my old house, normally I visit my folks every weekend however they’ve been away so I've
not had chance. Again, sorry for the delay.
Shapeshifters – Lola’s theme (ATFC’S Jive For Jezebal mix)
What makes this distinctive from the various other mixes? Well, two things. The bass guitar
hiding there in the background plays a key role in keeping LT fresh. It’s not in your face
but it does make a difference. The breakdown roughly halfway through puts it to the test.
It’s almost like a rock band at a gig and the bass guitar player gets a solo. The crowd goes
silent, the long greasy haired bloke twangs away on his guitar and everyone’s hooked. It does
the job perfectly, passes with flying colours and that.
The second and less notable difference is the vocals. What ever effects are used (I’m not
technical so can’t answer that one) they sound more personal, like they were sang for you
and know one else. Maybe it’s because I'm listening to it over headphones but they just feel
more homely, closer to you.
The riff we all know and love shows its face on more than one occasion reminding us why we
fell in love with this in the first place.
A nice addition to an already perfect track.
Shapeshifters – Lola’s theme (Norman Jay’s Good Time Vocal mix)
I’m going to be honest with this review. I got my names mixed up. I thought Norman Jay was
Fatboy Slim. As I held my shiny new vinyl in my hand I was smirking to myself, after a shoddy
marriage ruined by that lovely thing we call the press this guy’s bounced back with some proper
lively tracks different from your average dance event.
It wasn’t until the intro ran its course it clicked; Fatboy Slim’s real name isn’t Norman Jay,
its Norman Cook. Doh!
With that my hopes and dreams crashed. Don’t get me wrong, nothing against NJ, but I was
expecting something so different from everything we know today and it suddenly dawned on me
nothing this track could do would separate it from the various mixes we’ve already got. I
was right. Had I not actually checked the sleeve print id think I was listening to the ATFC’s
Jive mix. Really. We’ve heard it all before, it’s not ground breaking; it’s the original mix
with a different kick and a less influential bass guitar floating in the background.
Nothing to write home about I’m afraid. If perhaps this is the first mix you ever hear then
there’s every chance you’ll fall in love. Otherwise, you’ll probably scratch your head.
Overall, I really like the ATFC remix, had I of listened to the Norman Jay mix before hand
and not got my names mixed up I'd of probably enjoyed it more, but alas. An essential purchase
for the ATFC mix.
