Slip Friction - Crazy / Cheap Emotions - B.T.G.

Mondo Records

Catalogue Number: MND013

Something a little bit different from the guys at Mondo this time, an EP featuring two different production aliases, although both stem from the Cern team according to the promo sheet. Both sides differ quite significantly in style so let's give them a whirl.

Slip Friction - Crazy

This begins with a tough pounding kick and almost tech style percussion and clap which drops away to a mad dark twisted synth line at around the 45 second mark which acts as the bassline. The percussion builds and layers of echoing synths come in at the end of each phrase before a massive crash and the bassline begins to filter and distort before the beats kick back in again. A lush arpeggiating synth line comes in over the mad synths to begin to build the tune before stabbing synth chords really begin to lift the tune. Certainly this is not your average trance tune and I can see this not appealing to some people but I love it with it's dark twisted sound and uplifting mid section.

Cheap Emotions - Battle Trance Galaxia

This begins with a weird looped almost sci-fi effect before a tough pounding kick drum comes in to really get the tnue started. Again tough percussion make this a full-on trancer right from the word go before a driving bassline joins the fun. A short drop at around the 2 minute mark again with a strange looped vocal snippet and then off we go as the tough beats and acidy synth lines work really well. The snippets of 'sound system' and then these resonate and slow down to the breakdown. Haunting layers of pads and strings give this an epic feel before the main synth riff filters in from the background, the snares roll and the synths filter in and out in an almost hard trance style before the beats kick back in hard. A full-on trancer in an almost K90 style which again makes this something a little bit from the normal trance tracks.

Overall then another quality release from the Mondo stable. I've played both sides on my RiseFM and ETN shows with some good reactions. As expected not everyone gets the dark twisted sounds of Crazy but on the other hand, everyone agrees that Battle Trance Galaxia is absolute quality. Nice to see some labels taking a little gamble and putting out something a little different. Check this one out as you might just love it.
