Usual Aspect - Mr Blue
Motion Music
Catalogue Number: MOTN001
Firstly I'd like to apologise for a lack of reviews of late - I've just been very
busy with other projects (watch this space) and just had no time so some of these
promos are a few weeks old and I'm trying to catch up.
Well here we have the first release for a new UK trance label out of Guildford,
Surrey. Not much info about them so if they want to give me a full rundown I'll
update this review.
Onto the vinyl and you get the following mixes:
A1) Thrillseekers Mix
AA1) Original Progressive Mix
Starting things off with the Thrillseekers mix, this starts off with a typical Steve
Helstrip bassline and kick with a mellow synth riff layered over the top. Echoing
claves and other percussion drop in as the beat drops away only to kick back in
with the gated snare. A lush arpeggiated synth riff kicks in over the top and instantly
makes this one of those tunes you'll hear mixing in a mile away. Layers of pads and
choral vox build the tune as we drop to the break, leaving the pads to lift the mood.
A beautiful haunting synth comes in over the pads lifting the hands to the ceiling and
then it kicks back in with the synth melody and the beats. This will work brilliantly
towards the end of a warmup set or the beginning of a mid-evening set and I've also
heard Marc West drop this at Passion Vs Frisky and it went down a storm. Good stuff
Over onto the other side and we have the original progressive mix which IMO isn't really
an accurate name cos it's not proggy at all. This starts with a nice bassline riff and
kick drum soon joined by echoing percussion fx dropping over the top. The familiar
arpeggiated synth riff drops in over the top and the percussion starts to build. I
particularly like the use of the short delayed synths which drop in behind as the tune
starts to build and the choral vox pads also build the atmosphere but in a more mellow
way to the Thrillseekers mix. The tune drops to the break where the mellow synth riff
bubbles away and goes thru a key change as layers of choral pads again lift the mood
before kicking back in and getting the feet stomping.
A lovely little release from the guys over at Motion and an excellent start for a new
label. I featured the Thrillseekers mix in my recent guestmix on Risefm.com and I've
been playing it all the time since I got it a few weeks ago and it's always gone down
a storm. It's one of those brilliantly useful tunes which are great for lifting the crowd
at the end of an early set and indeed I heard Marc West also play it at Frisky Vs
Passion the other week and it went down a storm. Highly recommended and a label to
watch I think.
