Orkidea Feat Valeska - Melancholy
Black Hole Recordings
Catalogue Number: N/A
Another new release from Tiesto's Black Hole label this time from Orkidea (of Unity fame). This
time you get the following mixes to choose from on the promo vinyl:
A1) Melancholy (Original Mix)
B1) Melancholy (DJ Cor Fijneman's Outstanding Remix)
B2) Melancholy (Hardy Heller's Take You There Mix)
Let's start with the original mix. It starts out with a nice bouncing bassline and kick drum.
The percussion builds through the intro with quiet synth blips in the background and the vocal begins.
This is quite a mellow affair but I can see this being one of those tunes you either love or hate as
the vocalist has quite a non-trance voice (IMO). The track builds nicely in the middle with some powerful
synth string chords in the background and stabs but I'm not 100% with the overall package - I'm just not
feeling this particular mix. It's nice but nothing new.
Over onto the B side and we have Fijneman's mix. Now I didn't particularly rate his recent remix
of Andain but I have to say this is very nice. Like I said before, it's quite a mellow vocal and I think
he's done a good job in keeping the backing quite minimal and almost progressive in style with echoing
synth stabs over the filtering resonant bassline and it works really well here. Nice analogue sounding
synth chords work well as the tune builds towards the centre then are joined by a nice arpeggiated synth
riff which has this nice square wave sound which works well alongside the bassline and chords - yep I'm
liking this one. The backing drops and the synth changes to a nice riff sequence with strings which then
continue as the bassline and drums kick back in.
Now for the Hardy Heller mix. This starts with just a kick drum and shaker with a few echoing
conga (I think) sounds. This drops to a nice arpeggiated bassline and driving bass drum in a tough prog
trance kinda style. Small snippets of the vocals are used to echo in and out of the mix in the drop which
is quite nice. I do like the bass synths which bounce around all over - nice but not something I'd play out
as it wouldn't really fit my style but I can appreciate the production.
Unusally for me, I'm gonna go with the Cor Fijneman mix with this one. Nice bit of mellow vocal
trance which will work really well early on in a set as you're beginning to build. As I said before some
people will hate the vocal as she has a really kind of distinctive voice but give it a few listens and I
think it works really well. Not essential but definitely worth checking if you like your vocal trance.
