Scissor Sisters - Mary (Junkie XL Mix)
Polydor Records
Catalogue Number: SNIP18
Well I have to say when dropped on the doormat I was a little surprised - Scissor Sisters
with a Junkie XL mix? The original version is quite a slow ballad and pretty different to
some of their other stuff but hey - let's give it a try
Promo vinyl contains the following:
A1) Junkie XL Mix
B1) Accapella
Kicking off the Junkie XL mix, this starts with a percussion intro soon joined by some
interesting guitar style chords over the top and a quiet bassline which could work well as
a set opener. Extra layers of percussion typical of the Junkie XL sound soon begin to
build alongside the intro then the looped vocals drift in from the background until the
kick drops in just before the 2 minute mark to get things starting nicely. Now obviously
at the end of the day you're really going to ask does the vocal work with the remix and
I have to say, much as I hate to admit it, that it works really well here. The guitar chords
and synths work really well with the melancholy vocal of the original. A typically massive
breakdown in the middle sees layers of guitar notes build the atmosphere alongside the vocals
and theres enough power in the production to keep the dancefloor happy.
The accapella is also provided for the house and other DJs who like to play a little more
It may be a little commercial, but to be honest with the state of clubland at the moment
anything which can get the public back into enjoying decent productions can only be a good
thing. I've played this both on the radio show and out and it does work extremely well -
the production is typical Junkie XL class and the vocal is just enough without being overbearing.
Worth checking if you like his production style.
