Gadjo - So many times (Original / Dub mix)
Subliminal Recordings
Catalogue Number: SUB 134
Subliminal records have been attempting to incorporate a different sound into
their releases of late, in a bid to inject a slice of originality into house
music. The critics will always pick up on the generic flaws of the genre;
however, sometimes a track comes a long like Gadjo with an air of originality,
whilst still managing to place a tick in every box of the, “what makes a classic
house tune”. Add to this the extra credentials of being released on arguably
the biggest US based house label, Pete Tong essential new tune, and 2004 Ibiza
anthem and you know you’re onto a winner.
The vinyl features on the A side the Original mix, and on the B the dub mix,
which takes exactly the same form as A but with minimal vocal action, just
a short drifting in an out of the hook line. The Original mix then kicks off
with typical sounding house beats, the main piano riff is bubbling under from
the outset. Addictive trumpet licks bridge the transitions of the intro as the
percussion builds along with the vocal drifting in an out. It’s only a matter of
moments before the piano drops to its full extent and lee Cabrera (shake it)-esque
carnival drums ripple in and out of the foreground, the track has a great party
atmosphere about it, whilst remaining as serious as funky house track can be. It’s
not until the break when this track really starts to shine for me, and what a break
it is, possibly the longest and most excitable ones I’ve heard in a house track for
ages! The gorgeously hypnotic vocal drops in full, whilst an acoustic guitar plays
out the same riff as the piano. The claps add moment, before the piano comes back
with a vengeance. Smile at the crowd noise in the background, which sounds like a
hoard of excitable fans at a live PA. The vocal changes key, and the hairs on the
back of the neck start to stand on end, a difficult thing for a funky track to
achieve, and then we drop right back into the action with all the energy you’d expect
from such an immense build up. This is peak-time, party time anthem material. This
shouldn’t fail to make you smile, a fantastic release from the ever consistent
Subliminal..
