LMC vs U2 - Take me to the clouds above
AATW
Catalogue Number: White
Now Whitney Housten sampling records aren't generally a good thing,
however LMC have gone a good job in taking the first couple of lines from an
old Whitney power ballad and have turned it into something rather catchy.
Don't be put off by this, the track is a prime example of a minimal record
which sits somewhere between house and trance. That said, this is always
going to be one of those love it or hate it kind of records, and without a
doubt it's destined for big chart success.
What we have is a chunky house beat with whether you dare to admit
it or not a very Gabriel and Dresden sounding, driving bassline with a kind
of guitar edge to it, throbbing tenaciously underneath those beats. Think
Joey Negro and you won't be too far away. Now what grabbed me with this
record was the vocal, I personally think they're really rather gorgeous,
I'm sure many may disagree. Plenty of reverb going off in all directions,
it has a very atmospheric airy feel to it in possibly an attempt at
recreating those clouds above. It's not quite ethereal in the sense that
house music doesn't generally produce that kind of sound, sensation or
feeling, which is why it can easily be considered to have a trancier
alter-ego. Whatever the case it's a bit of a grower.
LMC have in the past worked with some shocking artists, the likes
of Lasgo instantly spring to mind. They have themselves also made some
really rather dodgy tracks, Take me to the clouds above feels on more much
more of a serious and professional level and the days of euro cheese could
well be behind them. You can't help feeling they may storm the charts with
this and fade into obscurity, but that's fine by us. Whatever your stance
on records like this, take an open minded approach and you might well find
yourself quite suprised by this.
